I have a new liking for murder ballads!I didnt know that they existed elsewhere from Nick Caves title...I thought it was just his own twist, but evidcentally they have a genre of theere own
Murder Ballads are a specific subgenre of the broadsheet ballad, a narrative poem that tells a tale of murder
I expecially Nick Caves CD though
when looking at murder ballads online i found one that reminded me very much of Nick Caves "Where The Wild Roses Grow" (Eliza Day) song on "The Murder Ballads" CD
heres the ballad:
Banks of the Roses
LOCATION OF MURDER: Cave near a river
METHOD: Knife (in some versions)
NAME OF KILLER/ RELATION TO VICTIM: Johnny, boyfriend
MOTIVE: Unspecified
METHOD OF BODY DISPOSAL: Burial
JUSTICE DONE: No.
When I was a wee thing, I heard my mother say
That I was meant for rambling and would easy go astray
And before that I would work, I would rather sport and play
With my Johnny on the banks of red roses
On the banks of red roses, my love and I sat down
He took out his tuning box to play his love a tune
In the middle of the tune, his love got up and cried
Oh Johnny, lovely Johnny, would you leave me?
So they walked and they talked until they came upon a cave
Where the night before her darling had spent digging on her grave
Aye, the night before her darling had spent digging on her grave
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of red roses
Oh no, oh no, cried she, that grave's not meant for me
Yes, oh yes, my darling, that your bridal bed shall be
Yes, oh yes, my darling, that your bridal bed shall be
And he's made her to lie down on red roses
And all on his way h0meward, his heart was filled with fear
Every maid he came upon, he thought it was his dear
Yes, every maid he came upon, he thought it was his dear
Who he made to lie down on red roses
here is nick cave's ballad (from "the murder ballads)"
Where the Wild Roses Grow
He called me The Wild Rose
But my name was Eliza Day
Why he called me it I do not know
For my name was Eliza Day
From the first day I saw her I knew she was the one
She stared in my eyes and smiled
For her lips were the colour of the roses
That grew down the river, all bloody and wild
When he knocked on my door and entered the room
My trembling subsided in his sure embrace
He would be my first man, and with a careful hand
He wiped out the tears that ran down my face
he called me The Wild Rose
But my name was Eliza Day
Why he called me it I do not know
For my name was Eliza Day
On the second day I brought her a flower
She was more beautiful than any woman I'd seen
I said, "Do you know where the wild roses grow,
so sweet and scarlet and free?"
On the second day he came with a single red rose
He said: "Give me your loss and your sorrow"
I nodded my head, as I lay on the bed
"If I show you the roses will you follow?"
he called me The Wild Rose
But my name was Eliza Day
Why he called me that I do not know
For my name was Eliza Day
On the third day he took me to the river
He showed me the roses and we kissed
And the last thing I heard was a muttered word
As he knelt above me with a rock in his fist
On the last day I took her where the wild roses grow
And she lay on the bank, the wind light as a thief
And I kissed her goodbye, said, "All beauty must die"
And I lent down and planted a rose between her teeth
he called me The Wild Rose
But my name was Eliza Day
Why he called me it I do not know
For my name was Eliza Day
For my name was Eliza Day
For my name was Eliza Day
what do you guys think?
