you were there *emotional*

This poem was written by me and is addressing my dad, he never pays attention when I try to talk to him or anything, I've written him letters to try and explain how I was feeling and that didn't work so I wrote him this poem instead. Didn't work, he still ignores me but I deal with it by ignoring him in turn!!

You were there
When I needed you
For help with work
Or if I was feeling blue

And you were there
When I was in the school play
I thought I had made you proud
I thought I had made your day

But five years later
Here I am
Alone in my room
Studying for an exam

You are still there
To help with my work
But with anything else
You just don’t seem to care

Gone are the days
So friendly and free
And no-one it seems
Is as lonely as me

Alone in my room
I’ll write you a song
And pray that you’ll read it
Before the day’s gone

The candle-flame flickers
And I extinguish its light
As gone is my place
In my family’s life

Mind numbing pain
Now enters my head
And there are now times
When I wish I was dead

You don’t understand me
And I don't think you will
Most of the time
You will just pay the bill

You don’t like my music
Or the clothes that I wear
And I don’t think you’ve noticed
What I did to my hair

You no longer see
All the things that I do
You don’t seem to realise
It’s not all for you

I hear you all laughing
And I wish I was there
I wish you could tell me
Whether you still care

You think that I hate you
But you’re never around
To share all my pain
And pick me up off the ground

My life is a mess
I don't know what to do
It seems no-one can help me
And least of all you…

This is a beautiful peice of writing crazystrange! Your voice really comes out in the poem's words and structure; I love how its simplistic...almost like asking your father to understand something so simple isnt possible; becuase what seems simple is really a story of years and time and hurt; stuff that is deep in your heart and writing. Im sorry that your dad didnt respond to this poem....but i do see a beautifully painted poem. I love it. Thank you for sharing it with me and all of us on here

Thats a great poem. It kinda reminds me of a close relative of mine. Her dad wasn't there for her either. The only attention she got from her dad was when he was beating her.
Would you mind if I copied the poem to show her?

Lost Soul, of course you can show it to your friend, let me know what she thinks and I'm sorry to hear that her dad beat her, my dad doesn't do that he just ignores me completely.

That's really good. It's simple, but very emotional and it's really understandable.. i dunno it feels like I can relate even though I've never been in that type of situaton..

I sent the poem to my friend and she said she liked it and it also reminded her of a lot of ppl. I guess theres a lot of people out there that can relate to that poem.
